Puerto de la Cruz hosted a new edition of SCP College from July 1 to 12, once again positioning Tenerife as a key connection point between Spanish women’s basketball talent and the United States college system.

For nearly two weeks, players born between 2005 and 2009 took part in an intensive programme combining training, team bonding and competition. The goal was not simply to improve technical or tactical skills, but to bring the players closer to a real possibility: continuing both their academic and athletic development at American universities and Junior Colleges.

The atmosphere throughout the camp reflected that balance between ambition and excitement. On the court, there was hard work, constant feedback and plenty of intensity. Off the court, there was also time to share experiences, ask questions and gain a clearer understanding of a recruitment process that can often feel complicated for players and their families.

Ten Days of Work and Individual Support

Official training sessions began on July 2 and followed a structure similar to that of a national team training camp. The participants completed ten days of work under the supervision of the Sport Change Project coaching staff.

One of the camp’s main strengths was its personalised approach. SCP College maintained an approximate ratio of one coach for every six players, allowing the staff to focus on specific areas according to each athlete’s position and individual needs.

Decision-making, game reading, technical execution and the ability to perform under pressure were among the main areas covered. It was not only about running more or taking more shots… it was also about understanding the game better.

The sporting programme was led by Ángel G. Jareño, a coach with more than 45 years of experience in elite basketball, including spells with Real Madrid and Spain’s national youth teams. Alongside him, Ángel Sanz brought his knowledge of the American college system and the process players must follow when pursuing an athletic scholarship.

The Showcase, a Stage for Talent

The final showcase took place on July 10 and 11 and became one of the most important moments of SCP College 2026. The players competed in a 4-on-4 tournament with professional referees, while the games were also broadcast via streaming.

The showcase offered an opportunity to assess the players in real competitive situations. Beyond points and statistics, the format made it possible to evaluate their adaptability, defensive effort, communication with teammates and response in high-pressure moments.

The event reinforced the main purpose of SCP College: creating opportunities. Sport Change Project works as a link to more than 250 Junior Colleges and American universities, giving participants a potential route into the US college basketball system.

Guidance Beyond the Camp

The end of the event did not mark the end of the process. After the camp, each player received an individual report assessing her performance and offering recommendations for continued development.

This follow-up guidance is especially valuable for athletes who still need to improve certain areas before making the move to the United States. Sport Change Project maintains that Junior College is often the most realistic route for many Spanish players, as it allows them to adapt gradually to the language, academic demands and level of competition.

Tenerife, Where Talent Meets the Future

SCP College 2026 concluded its Tenerife edition after providing young players with an experience built around learning, teamwork and visibility. The event did not promise easy routes or automatic scholarships, but it did offer tools, information and direct contact with a pathway that, until a few years ago, may have seemed much further away.

For twelve days, Puerto de la Cruz became the setting for training sessions, games and shared ambitions. For some players, the camp may have represented another important step in their development. For others, it may have been the beginning of a journey that could eventually lead to an American university.

That was, ultimately, the purpose of SCP College: turning talent into real opportunities.
