The class of 2027 already has more than 130 players committed: why recruiting is moving faster than ever

While many players still think they have time, the American university system is already closing spots for two seasons from now.

The class of 2027 — players who have not even finished high school — already has more than 130 confirmed commitments to Division I universities. The latest additions were recorded in mid-June. And the number keeps rising every week.

This is not an anecdotal figure. It is the confirmation of a trend that completely changes how the calendar has to be understood.

Recruiting moves earlier every year

A decade ago, a player settled her university destination in her final year of high school. Today, the major programs sign their targets two and even three years in advance.

The reason is simple: the competition for talent is fierce. Coaches cannot afford to wait. They identify young profiles, follow them across seasons, and secure their commitment long before they reach their senior year. By the time the contact window officially opens, much of the work is already done.

This creates an uncomfortable reality for anyone who arrives late: by the time a player starts moving in her final year, many of the spots at the best programs are already committed.

What this means for a Spanish player

If elite recruiting runs two years ahead, the conclusion is clear: the moment to start building your profile is not when you finish playing in youth categories. It is now.

That does not mean a 17-year-old has missed the train. It means she has to understand how the system works and act accordingly. Most Spanish players do not enter the American system through the door of the major D-I programs that sign three years in advance. They enter through the Junior College route.

And that route has a decisive advantage in this context: it operates with more flexible timelines, more accessible entry requirements, and a constant demand for players who can contribute from day one. While D-I programs close their class of 2027 years in advance, Junior Colleges keep generating spots every season that are not filled by local talent alone.

The Junior College is not the slow path. It is the real path — and, for most Spanish players, the smartest one — to enter the system and, two years later, make the leap to a D-I university with American experience already on the résumé.

What you should be doing right now

If you are between 15 and 17 years old, the calendar is sending you a signal: do not wait.

Have updated game footage. Know your real level and your projection. Understand the academic and eligibility requirements. And, above all, be in an environment where someone can evaluate you with real criteria and connect you with the programs that fit your profile.

That is exactly the work of Sport Change Project: evaluate, prepare, and connect, so that the leap happens at the right moment and to the right program.

The class of 2027 is already more than half closed. The class of 2028 has already started moving. The calendar waits for no one.
